Foodies love gastronomical films – like “Big Night,” “Eat Drink Man Woman,” or “Sideways.”

“Babette’s Feast” (original title: “Babettes gæstebud”) is a 33-year-old Danish film that celebrates lavish dining like no other. Food lovers walk out of the theater smiling – and hungry for a great meal.

Written and directed by the late Axel Gabriel Erik Mørch (better known as Gabriel Axel), this is the story of two maiden sisters (played by Birgitte Federspiel and Bodil Kjer) who take in Babette (Stéphane Audran), a French woman who offers to be their cook and housekeeper for free. After 14 years of service, Babette wins a lottery, but rather than returning to her better lifestyle in Paris, she decides to prepare a great feast for the sisters and their church congregation.

And a great feast it is!

Well it should be. We learn that Babette used to be the head chef of the Café Anglais in Paris.

Yum.

“Babette’s Feast” is showing on Tuesday night at Tropic Cinema.

Why go see an Oscar-winning 1987 foreign film, food and wine lover or not?

Because the Tropic has turned this screening into a – to borrow the term – Big Night.

Joining the audience will be Master Sommelier Doug Frost, who will discuss the wines featured in the film. What’s more, throughout the screening, you will have the opportunity to taste similar wines to those being featured on screen!

Frost is one of only three people in the world to have achieved Master Sommelier and Master of Wine distinctions, so he’s a perfect choice to introduce “Babette’s Feast.” And host a wine tasting.

You don’t need an invitation. But you will need a ticket.

Only $40 (or $35 for members).
