We’re often unaware how much we’re manipulated by movie scores. This background music has the ability to make our spirits soar, hearts palpitate, or breath catch in our throat.

For an inspiring example of the role musical scores play in the world of cinema, you will definitely want to see (and hear) “Score: A Film Musical Documentary.” It’s screening this coming Wednesday as part of the ongoing Cinematheque Series at Tropic Cinema.

Filmmaker Matt Schrader’s documentary gathers some of Hollywood’s top composers to give you an insider’s look at how music comes to films.

Dozens of the art form’s most talented composers — from Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman to Quincy Jones and Randy Newman — share the secrets of their creative process in scoring films.

Aside from technical details about how music has evolved in film, it is the documentary’s sampling of great movie soundtracks that will have you swaying in your seat.
