Classics at the Tropic: Now, Voyager

Not Rated, 117 minutes / Cast: Bette Davis, Claude Rains, Paul Henreid

A tender love story, a taut psychological drama, an inspiring tale of physical and spiritual transformation—"Now, Voyager" is all three, as well as a Bette Davis career milestone, resulting in her sixth Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Davis plays Boston heiress Charlotte Vale, a neurotic mess, largely because of her domineering mother (Gladys Cooper). After a stint in a sanatorium, where she receives the attention of Dr. Jasquith (Claude Rains), Charlotte comes out of her shell and elects to go on a cruise. Aboard ship she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid) and falls in love, despite his being married—and their tryst is the start of a journey through love, heartbreak and eventual contentment. For the ultimate in romantic melodrama, it's "Now, Voyager" now, then and forever.
