While we can’t meet up over popcorn and a glass of wine at the Tropic, we can still enjoy some of the best new independent film! The Tropic’s new Virtual Cinematheque Series now offers you the chance to check out new movies at home—and to support the Tropic while you do! Next up: Key West Film Festival hit “Bacurau.”
A few years from now: Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga) notice that their village has literally vanished from most maps and a UFO-shaped drone starts flying overhead.
As the people of Bacurau try to figure out what’s going on, it becomes clear that their are a host of forces that want to expel them from their homes. From corrupt politicians to psychotic mercenaries, it’s going to take everything the village has to protect and maintain their remote community.
“… crams elements of the western, John Carpenter-y beats, mordant wit and peppery political commentary into one hugely entertaining modern exploitation flick.” —Time Out
