Brazilian artist and director Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull) returns with Divine Love, a “profound cinematic question about the nature of the country’s conflicted soul.” (IndieWire)
In 2027 Brazil, civil servant Joana — a devout evangelical Christian — uses her position in a notary’s office to offer a kind of therapy to couples who want to divorce. At the same time, her own marriage is strained: she and her husband Danilo are trying desperately to have a child, but neither her constant prayers nor any other methods of assistance seem to be able to fulfill their desire. Losing hope, they turn to a cult-like religious group called “Divino Amor,” which offers moral support — along with church-sanctioned partner-swapping. It’s the start of a journey that will challenge everything they believe.
“This is a shocking, wonderfully acted and surprisingly erotic film that leaves one with more questions than answers, like any good film that dares to tackle the vastness of faith should.” –RogerEbert.com
