Few figures loom larger in Key West’s literary history than Tennessee Williams — and we are proud to partner with the Key West Art and Historical Society to celebrate the legendary author and playwright throughout March!
The series continues with this uniquely Key West-connected film: “The Rose Tattoo,” filmed in large part right next door to Williams’s house on Duncan Street.
Williams wrote the play as well as the adapted screenplay as a showcase for his friend Anna Magnani, and she became the first Italian actress to earn a Best Actress Oscar for her work on the film. Magnani plays Serafina Delle Rose, an widowed seamstress who finally breaks out of her grief and depression when she meets a handsome truck driver played by Burt Lancaster.
With a rare happy ending, “The Rose Tattoo” is a perfect addition to the Tropic’s celebration of Tennessee Williams — and a great chance to see old Key West on screen.
