Based on the true story of 1950s fencing champion Ender Nelis, THE FENCER is “an effective mix of underdog sports drama and political thriller” (Los Angeles Times).
In 1953, Nelis—an Estonian resistance fighter—was forced to flee his Leningrad home to escape Stalin’s secret police. He finds work as a teacher, founds a sports club for his students and becomes a father figure to his fencing protegees. The sport becomes a form of self-expression for the students, and Endel a role model—until his past starts catching up with him, and he must make the choice between their progress and his own safety.
THE FENCER was Finland’s official Academy Awards entry last year; the film is in Estonian and Russian with English subtitles.
