The Tropic’s Summer Blockbuster Series comes to a fitting conclusion with Bruce Lee’s swan song, and one of the greatest kung fu films of all time: 1973’s “Enter the Dragon.”
The story finds Lee as a martial-arts expert recruited by an intelligence agency to help capture the drug kingpin whose gang was responsible for his sister’s death. The reclusive crime lord, Han (Shih Kien) operates from a fortified island manned by a team of crack martial artists — and he also happens to host a prestigious and brutal kung fu competition. Infiltrating the island as a contest entrant, Lee has to hold his own in the tournament while also trying to chop, kick, and otherwise fight his way into Han’s private headquarters.
The story is, of course, merely an excuse for showdown after showdown, featuring masterly fighting by Lee and a seasoned supporting cast in a wide variety of martial arts styles. The film made Lee a huge international star — despite being released a month after his untimely death at age 32.
