Tropic Cinema is pleased to be one of 24 screening partner venues selected for the 21/22 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Our series continues with “Duty Free,” a delightful and thought-provoking mother-and-son journey. After a 75-year-old immigrant mother gets fired from her job, her son (director Sian-Pierre Regis) takes her on a bucket-list adventure to reclaim her life. As she struggles to find work, he documents a journey that uncovers the difficulties of her past and the economic insecurity soon to shape not only her future, but that of an entire generation.

The film, along with a 30-minute recorded Q&A with the filmmaker, is available as a free, virtual-only screening from November 7-10 or in person at the Tropic on November 7 and 9. Click the links above for in-person tickets or virtual screening registration; virtual viewers can enjoy the film and discussion anytime during the four-day viewing window.

This series is brought to you by Linda Mewshaw as well as other public and private sources, including the National Endowment for the Arts.
