April 11, 2021 -
As part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, the Tropic is presenting a hybrid virtual and in-person screening of “Narrowsburg,” including a scheduled in-person visit from director Martha Shane! The film will be available via our virtual cinema from April 11-14, 2021, with the in-person screening and filmmaker appearance TBD.
Martha Shane’s acclaimed documentary tells the stranger-than-fiction story of a French film producer and her mafioso-turned-actor husband who attempt to turn a tiny town into the “Sundance of the East.” After a successful first year, Narrowsburg Film Festival co-founders Jocelyn Plante and Richard Castellano announced that they would produce a locally made film using residents in supporting roles and, eventually, as a source of funding—but by the time the second festival rolled around, the project was a mess and Plante and Castellano had already skipped town.
Ten years in the making, Narrowsburg catches up with the couple behind the debacle and residents of the town who have had to come to terms with falling victim to a scam through the allure and romance of filmmaking.
Southern Circuit screenings are funded in part by a grant from South Arts, a regional arts organization, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information about Southern Circuit and South Arts please visit www.southarts.org.
