All July, the Tropic’s Monday Night Classics series is celebrating ‘Merica—the patriotic, the political and both the absurdities and glories of war. In “The Great Escape,” an all-star action cast led by Steve McQueen and James Garner dramatizes the true story of the Allied POWs who broke out of the Nazis’ “escape-proof” camp.
Based on the book by pilot and POW Paul Brickhill, the first half of the film details the elaborate measures that the 250 prisoners took to dream up and develop their escape plan. Not all of them make it—and for those that do, the sprint to safety is just beginning. Led by the fearless Captain Hilts (McQueen, doing all his own stunts), a ragtag crew of two dozen have to make their way through enemy territory any way they can.
“This is one of the all-time great war movies, a PoW adventure from director John Sturges that celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Allied forces even when their backs were to the wall.” — Radio Times
