The Tropic’s November Noir series of Monday Night Classics continues with another iconic collaboration between director Billy Wilder and writer Raymond Chandler—in this case, an adaptation of the knife-twisting James M. Cain novel “Double Indemnity.”
Starring Fred MacMurray, Edward G. Robinson and Barbara Stanwyck, “Double Indemnity” is the archetype of California noir: a greedy, weak man is seduced and trapped by a cold, evil woman amidst modernist glamour, dark shadows and Expressionist lighting. In this case, Stanwyck’s wealthy, unsatisfied housewife convinces MacMurray’s calculating insurance agent to help kill her unsuspecting husband, make it look like an accident and cash in on his insurance policy.
The murder is the perfect crime. The increasingly paranoid aftermath is anything but—especially when Robinson’s tenacious investigator starts poking around.
