Few figures loom larger in Key West’s literary history than Tennessee Williams — and we are proud to partner with the Key West Art and Historical Society to celebrate the legendary author and playwright throughout March!
The series kicks off with “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, an intense, absorbing drama starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor at the height of their fame. Brick (Newman), an alcoholic ex-football player, drinks his days away and resists the affections of his wife, Maggie (Taylor). His reunion with his father, Big Daddy (Burl Ives), who is dying of cancer, jogs a host of memories and revelations for father, son and the entire family.
While director Richard Brooks’s adaptation departs in many ways from the stage play, the film stood on its own, earning six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Actor, Actress and Director.
“Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, both gorgeous beyond measure, strike sparks as the sexually unfulfilled Maggie and her tortured husband Brick, while Burl Ives is sensational as the family patriarch Big Daddy.” —Creative Loafing
