Event Category: Southern Circuit
Admission: $15 // Members $12

The Tropic Cinema is proud to be a Screening Partner for the 2018-19 Southern Circuit, a touring festival bringing the best of new independent film to communities across the South. Our 2019 slate of Southern Circuit films concludes with director Sam Rega’s “Breaking the Bee.”

The film chronicles the ups and downs of four Indian-American students, ages seven to 14, as they compete to realize their dream of winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee—and cement their place in the two-decade dynasty of Indian-Americans dominating the iconic competition. It’s an inside look at studying, family life, “bee season,” and being a kid with big dreams.

With expert commentary from CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Fareed Zakaria, ESPN’s Kevin Negandhi, comedian Hari Kondabolu, 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee winner, Nupur Lala, and others, the film also offers an analysis into the perfect storm of events that contribute to the trend.
