ANONYMOUS

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually created the body of work credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when scandalous political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles lusting for the power of the throne were brought to light in the most unlikely of places: the London stage. -- (C) Sony Pictures

NEIL YOUNG LIFE (Neil Young Journey)

This past May, Neil Young brought his solo tour to Toronto's Massey Hall, an iconic venue in the city of his birth. Jonathan Demme was on hand to capture the two nights, which highlighted new songs from the album Le Noise, produced by Daniel Lanois, mixed with classics like "Ohio" and "I Believe in You." At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity that balances his wisdom and experience. It's no onder he's been an inspiration to the likes of Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. In Neil Young Journeys, Demme intersperses the Massey Hall concert footage with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors and their daughters. As he drives past bulldozers transforming the landscape, he remarks, 'It's all gone... it's still in my head.'Written by TIFF

DEATH OF A SUPER HERO

Adolescence is often portrayed as a matter of life and death, but that's pretty much the case in helmer Ian FitzGibbon's coming-of-age-with-cancer romance "Death of a Superhero." Pic sidesteps cloying sentimentality and heavy-handedness with the help of a solid cast, led by Thomas Brodie-Sangster as a budding graphic novelist whose days may be numbered, but whose imagination fills the screen with macabre cartoons fueled by anger, frustration and an artistic soul. Mix of live-action and animation could attract a youth audience, but the pic's general appeal will lie in its honesty and touching performances.

With the help of Mortimer's best friend (Rupert Everett) they create a device that allows these women to achieve the desired result much more quickly. W.E. tells the story of two fragile but determined women - Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson - separated by more than six decades. In 1998, lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward's VIII's abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcée Wallis Simpson. RESTORATION (Boker Tov Adon Fidelman)
Q&A with Director

A drama about a family's effort to save their antique restoration business.
Max Malamud, a bit like Jacob Marley, is dead. Equipped with neither social skills nor business acumen, Fidelman handled the craft side of their antique furniture business, while Malamud provided the public face and, presumably, financial talents. ISLANDS (Isole)

Ivan is desperate for employment. One day his search takes him to a nearby island, where he finds himself stranded, penniless and unable to make his way back home to the dingy apartment he shares with his ailing father. Help arrives, almost magically, in the form of a mute young woman. Martina has retreated into silence. She lives with a middle-aged priest recently impaired by a stroke. Don Enzo is proud and independent, his gruffness a sign of his resentment at being fussed over by a sister whom he suspects has ulterior motives. Enzo believes his caretaker has her eye on a piece of land used to house his beloved bees - and she is certainly disapproving of the bohemian lifestyle he has adopted by befriending strays like Ivan and Martina. Meanwhile, as Ivan spends more time on Enzo's property, he becomes intrigued by the mysterious young woman who seeks solace with the bees but refuses to say a word. Written by TIFF

The first 15 min I didn't think I would make it through ths film. I watched and waited. As I left the theater in route to my next film, I was really happy I saw it. There is no dialogue and no score. Well, not in the traditional sense. The goat bells and workers tools etc made up a beautiful score. It reminded me of a striped down style of Dancer in the Dark. For the really independent film goer.

I hope you were able to catch this one before it left after one week at the Tropic. Another one where the performances make the movie. A sweet film about relationships. I loved the contrast between the two sets of relationships, the backword and unconfortable vs. the cheating and fighting. Guess which one survives. Hoffman's directorial debut.

Not for the faint-hearted, this film was difficult but I couldn't stop watching. Several times I threatened to leave. Graphic, filthy, and at a spot or two unbeleivable. Stalking at its worst and emotional hostage taking at it's most frightening. I'm still glad I stayed until the end.

I really liked this movie. The acting is great. I love the way the storyline unfoldes through the perception of the children in a very matter-of-fact way. I love that it was set in the 60's rather than the future. I found it to be more of a love story than a Sci-Fi although it certainly raises questions about humanity. I would love to see some nominations...

Tamara DreweTamara Drewe, UK
Genre: Art House & International, Drama, Comedy

Synopsis: Based on Posy Simmonds' beloved graphic novel of the same name (which was itself inspired by Thomas Hardy's classic Far From the Madding Crowd) this wittily modern take on the romantic English pastorale is a far cry from Hardy's Wessex. Tamara Drewe's present-day English countryside-stocked with pompous writers, rich weekenders, bourgeois bohemians, a horny rock star, and a great many Buff Orpington chickens and Belted Galloway cows-is a much funnier place. When Tamara Drewe sashays back to the bucolic village of her youth, life for the locals is thrown tail over teakettle. Tamara-once an ugly duckling-has been transformed into a devastating beauty (with help from plastic surgery). As infatuations, jealousies, love affairs and career ambitions collide among the inhabitants of the neighboring farmsteads, Tamara sets a contemporary comedy of manners into play using the oldest magic in the book-sex appeal

From Graham Green's chilling 1938 novel and A remake of the renowned 1957 film of the same title, provided the insiration for this highly stylized directorial debut. I loved it. Great over-the-top acting including a very sexy Helen Mirren. The lead actor reminded me ALOT of Leonardo DiCaprio only better. The score was very over powering. I liked the 60s setting instead of the 30s.

Definitely not the Cameron-Mitchell we've seen where he pushes sexual boundries. This film is more subtle, more tense, although it is not as gut wrenching as Revolutionary Road. It's like watching an explosion with no volume. Kidman will be sure to get an Oscar nod which will bring the attention to a difficult story line to watch. The relationship she forms with the hit and run driver is an interesting turnning point in the movie.

What a departure for Schwimmer's directing Run Fatboy Run and Friends. Owen and Keener are perfectly cast as the parents and Viola Davis as the therapist but the stand out performance goes to Liberato.

WOW! Visuially stunning. This was probably the second most talked about film. It's worth seeing for the dancing alone. It was great to see Hersey as the mother and Rider as the aging dancer. Portman can do no wrong in my book. Cassel seems to be in everything ( Mesrine) with 5 films in 2010 alone. Once the movie turns dark it is more Requiem for a Dream than The Wrestle.

RottenTomatoes.com

Roman Duris beats out his own performance in The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Based on a novel by Douglas Kennedy, the location was moved from USA to Eastern Europe. Beautiful and polished. I missed out seeing Deneuve at the EuropaCorp Gala to head to the Kevin Spacey Gala. Bummer!
